Emily's Story: Oakdale Changed Me They say Oakdale is harder than public school. That is because there are higher standards to meet at Oakdale, not only when it comes to following God, but also when it comes to academics, behavior, and even sports. Going from public school to a small Christian community like Oakdale is a big transition to make. But for me it is well worth it. Moving from public school to a small Christian community like Oakdale is a big transition to make. But, for me, it was well worth it. Before I came to Oakdale, I had little self-confidence and low self-esteem; I was generally pessimistic. I never dreamed I could be a leader. I wasn’t motivated to earn good grades in high school, to participate in team activities, or to be a hard worker. In general, I gave in to peer pressure, doing things I knew that neither my mom nor God would desire of me. I gave up on God, completely ignoring His presence in my life. One day my mom and I got a wake-up call. We both realized that I was getting too deep into trouble and that I needed to get away from the many temptations bombarding me in public school. I have changed drastically since Oakdale was introduced into my life. Although it took some time, I have become motivated to do well in school (I am on the honor roll), I have adapted to living in a dorm full of girls and noise, and I have become a harder worker. I have also begun to realize the value of leadership, and I am striving to be a good role model. Here at Oakdale, I have learned to be more optimistic, as daily I recognize my many blessings. But most importantly, since coming to Oakdale, I’ve allowed God to come back into my life. I have also learned to value the staff members here at Oakdale. The teachers, the dorm parents and the rest of the staff willingly give their time and attention to each student on campus. They share with each of us how God has helped them, and they encourage us to let God help us too. The staff strive to motivate students to improve their grades, behaviors and attitudes. It is amazing to see how much energy the staff put into helping students get a good education, learn to love God and build their character. Coming to Oakdale has been quite a journey already, and it is just the beginning. I have another year at Oakdale before I graduate. As I see the changes that Oakdale has made in me and in other students around me, I am thankful that I have chosen life with God and am headed down the straight path.
